Trying to conceive can be both exciting and challenging.

Understanding and implementing healthy habits to improve your fertility is a crucial step in this journey. Not only do these habits enhance your fertility, but they also pave the way for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

The Power of Preconception Care

I’m a firm believer that taking the time before you start trying to conceive to get your body as healthy as possible has a HUGE impact on your chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby. That is preconception care, and it’s an opportunity to improve overall health and fertility before you start trying to get pregnant.

The ideal amount of time to spend on preconception care before you try to get pregnant is between 90 – 120 days. This is your window of opportunity to have an impact on the health of your eggs and ovaries (and his sperm too).

A lot of people don’t understand that if you are ovulating during this cycle, your body already started preparing that egg three months ago. What you do and what you eat during this period has a direct influence on the health of that egg when it meets with the sperm.

On this YouTube episode of The Fertility Godmother’s Show, I talked about 5 healthy habits that will help you improve your fertility and your chances of getting pregnant.

Whether you’re actively trying to conceive or just planning for the future, these healthy habits can help increase your chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy pregnancy.

Many of us don’t realize that the things we do daily have an impact on our ability to conceive… But they REALLY DO.

Here are 5 Healthy Habits to Improve Your Fertility:

  1. Nutritious Diet for Fertility:
    • What to Include: Emphasize a diet rich in whole foods. Focus on high-quality proteins (like lean meats, fish, and plant-based proteins), healthy fats (such as avocados, nuts, and seeds), and a diverse range of vegetables and fruits. These foods provide essential nutrients like folate, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, vital for fertility.
    • What to Avoid: Minimize processed foods, trans fats, sugary drinks, and excessive caffeine. These can impact hormonal balance and overall reproductive health.
  2. Regular Exercise for Fertility Health:
    • Benefits: Exercise isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s crucial for hormonal balance. Activities like yoga, walking, and strength training can improve blood flow, reduce stress, and help maintain a healthy weight, all of which are beneficial for fertility.
    • Finding Balance: It’s important not to overdo it, as excessive high-intensity exercise can sometimes negatively impact fertility. Aim for moderate, consistent activity.
  3. Lifestyle Modifications:
    • Avoid Harmful Substances: Smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs are detrimental to fertility. Eliminating these substances is crucial for both men and women when trying to conceive.
    • Environmental Awareness: Reduce exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides and certain plastics. Choose organic foods when possible and be mindful of the products you use daily.
  4. Managing Stress:
    • Impact on Fertility: Chronic stress can disrupt hormonal balance and ovulation. Implementing stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness can significantly improve your fertility.
    • Seeking Support: Consider therapies such as acupuncture or counseling to help manage stress.
  5. Sleep Quality:
    • Importance of Rest: Adequate sleep is often overlooked but is essential for hormonal balance and overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
    • Creating a Sleep-Positive Environment: Ensure your bedroom is a calm, relaxing space. Avoiding screens before bed and establishing a regular sleep routine can also help.
